****Picked by Billboard as One of the 100 Greatest Music Books of All-Time****
****Pitchfork Book Club''s first selection****

Here''s what The Rap Year Book does: It takes readers from 1979, widely regarded as the moment rap became recognized as part of the cultural and musical landscape, and comes right up to the present, with Shea Serrano hilariously discussing, debating, and deconstructing the most important rap song year by year. Serrano also examines the most important moments that surround the history and culture of rap music--from artists'' backgrounds to issues of race, the rise of hip-hop, and the struggles among its major players--both personal and professional. Covering East Coast and West Coast, famous rapper feuds, chart toppers, and show stoppers, The Rap Year Book is an in-depth look at the most influential genre of music to come out of the last generation.

Complete with infographics, lyric maps, uproarious and informative footnotes, portraits of the artists, and short essays by other prominent music writers, The Rap Year Book is both a narrative and illustrated guide to the most iconic and influential rap songs ever created. It''s like the gold tank from Master P''s "Make ''Em Say Uhh!" video, except it''s a book. It''s like Kanye''s verse on "Put On," except it''s a book. It''s like the face Biggie made when he was on the boat with Puffy in "Hypnotize," except it''s a book.

From the Author

If you buy this book then I want you to know that I love you as a human. If you don''t buy this book I still love you as a human but I probably love you less than the people who did buy it.

About the Author

Shea Serrano is a no. 1  New York Times bestselling author. Currently, he is a staff writer for The Ringer.

Full disclosure I didn''t actually order this book from Amazon. I got it as a gift. Basically, I had to attend this dinner party with my girlfriend where I was about to meet a group of people I''d never met before. It was important to me to make a good first impression and not be this boring dude with nothing interesting to say. The night before I could barely sleep. When I finally did get to sleep I had the strangest dream. The ghost of Big Pun came out of my closet and into my bedroom. I was like oh my god...you''re really him. Big Moon Dog, Big Punisher, Pun...

Pun was like "yeah yeah kid and a bunch of other dopey nicknames, forget about that stuff, we don''t have much time. I''m here because you''re in some kind of a pickle, right? Some big dinner party, and you got nothing to say? Here''s what I want you to do, go in there, and talk about hip hop."
I said, hey Pun, look man, I don''t know the first thing about hip-hop. I''m a real pale blond kid from the suburbs.

The Big Pun looked at me and he said something I''ll never forget. He said, "Everyone gets a chance to do something great. Most people never take that chance, either they''re too scared, or they don''t recognize it when it spits on their shoes. Remember when you followed Shea Serrano on twitter the other day? Someone''s telling you something kid, if I were you, I''d listen."

Then as he headed back towards my closet, he went over to my desk and picked up six rulers. He said, "six rulers...I don''t know why, but can I take these?" I told him sure thing, and thanks for the advice. He told me, " Remember kid, there''s heroes, and there''s legends. Heroes, get remembered, but legends never die." And then he was gone. I woke up the next morning and this book was under my pillow. I spent the whole day reading it. And I crushed that dinner party. They''re talking about making it a weekly thing.

TLDR: Funny and entertaining. Simple choice to pick up for you or a friend with its low price point.

I have had this pre-ordered for months, and after a long wait it is everything I wanted and more.

First off, this is an insane amount of entertainment for the price. It is filled with witty comments and real historical context.

It has more than 200 pages of content that everyone can enjoy. Even Floyd Mayweather can have fun because the illustrations by Arturo Torres are incredible. See page 158 for an incredible version of 50 Cent as The Thing or Lil Wayne as a goblin on page 188.

Shea''s writing style is an easy read and is an entertaining "controlled chaos" with the use of footnotes to bring laughs is right out of the Bill Simmons playbook. It reads like a well-informed humorous and persuasive rant. Can''t wait for Serrano''s next project.

I loved the debate that Serrano presents in ''The Rap Year Book''.
He uses facts, stories and humor to address what he feels is the best song of each year, and why he feels that way.
He makes for good arguments, not just that it was popular or how the beat banged. He explained the ripples through rap and the culture surrounding it.
And I loved that he had other people rebuttal each song with with what they felt was more important for each year, like a true debate has a back and forth.
Any fan of rap will enjoy this book, hands down.
Also, I made a playlist adding each song and as I''d read the chapter, I would listen to the song to add a bit of the vibe...for fun.

This is the 3 Wolf Moon of Yearbooks, only if instead of Wolves, it''s got Biggie, Tupac, and the God MC himself, Rakim.

Ordinary yearbooks don''t have pages and pages of painstakingly hand-drawn illustrations; no, all they''ve got are crappy snapshots that some wage-slave took on the hottest day of the year, then didn''t even bother photoshopping (or airbrushing, ''cuz I''m old school like that).

Ordinary yearbooks only let you pick one quote, and most people botch even that with something lame from Led Zeppelin that even the band was too high to figure out. *This* yearbook is packed with quotes, cover-to-cover! And not only that, they''re the cream of the crop! Seriously, if anyone in my high school had dropped something as epic as "Fish, which is my favorite dish" as their yearbook quote, I probably could''ve just skipped college.

Ordinary yearbooks are full of photos of your ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend...and that''s only if you were actually lucky enough to *have* one. *This* yearbook is full of old familiar friends that you''re actually happy to read about.

Ordinary yearbooks are full of lame-ass notes that your friends scribbled on the last day of school. *This* yearbook is full of the bomb-ass wit and wisdom of Dr. Shea Serrano, PhD (I''m just assuming that he''s going to have been awarded multiple honorary doctorates by the time you''re reading this).

Ordinary yearbooks make you think your past was lame. *This* yearbook is a reminder of how freakin'' amazing your past actually was.

The insight contained in the pages of this book would be a bargain at any price. Buy it. Buy it now...and then buy it again...because C.R.E.A.M.

Shea''s writing is humorous, thought provoking, and honest. This book not only takes you back, on a journey through someone of the greatest Hip Hop songs, but it educates and informs on why those songs were so important to a culture, to politics, to the fans who were listening to it, and why they''re still important today. He could have just made a list of his favorite rap songs, but his in depth passion and research take this to a whole new level. Whether you grew up listening to this song, or you''re exploring Hip Hop for the first time, this is where to start.

His writing style, based on anecdotes and humor, will not appeal to everybody, but I found it very interesting and enjoyable.
Most bad reviews on this book attack it saying that most of the songs are not the best song of the year but rather mainstream songs, but Shea''s point is that those songs were the most influential / the first time a rap song of a certain flavor was made / the first time a rap song had such a success on radio / the beginning of a certain label that changed hip hop history. I agree that sometimes there are better songs (and Shea often does too, and he often mentions other songs which still helps to rediscover some great songs) but those chosen definitely made a huge difference in hip hop history. And obviously those choices are always highly subjective and some people will cry when they see that their favorite song is not on it, it was my case too but I also agreed that it didn''t revolutionize hip hop in the same way.
That''s the purpose of this book and that''s why I found it was a great book

Bought this book as I am a big hip hop fan and a fan of autobiographies and learning the meaning behind songs. This book blends all three in a really succinct and fun way. The stories are sometimes enlightening, sometimes funny but always informative. I have learned loads about some of my favourite artists I didn''t know about before! The artwork in this book is also great and the layout on the pages is so well thought out. Honesty, couldn''t improve on this book! You can read this book in one go or pick it up periodically and still enjoy it because of the way it is organised. This would make a great Christmas or Birthday present for a loved one who is a fan of the genre, or a fan of music! Probably the best purchase of 2019 for me!!
