When this came out in the summer of 97 i was on a plane flying down to oklahoma to vist my brother. I only found out primus had a new one out right before i left. I couldnt wait to get back home so i could pick it up on casette. The first thing i noticed about the brown album was the dry sound that it had. It didnt have the polished mix that the previous albums had but that was one of the things that appealed to me. Everything sounded like they recorded it live with very few overdubs. Les Claypool has always been a monster bass player and a great song writer. He has always been able to blend dark subject matter and strange humor skillfully and on this cd he was at his best. Larry LaLonde is great on guitar as usual and Brain Mantia is one hell of a drummer. He shines on this entire album. Not bad for his debut. He does a great Gene Kupa on Kalamazoo and check out his work on The chastising of renegade and Arne. If your a fan of that Primus weirdness you wil find it on The Return Of The Sathington Wiloughby and the hard rocking Camelback cinema. My favs are Fisticuffs, Over the Falls, and Shake Hands With Beef but i really like the whole album. Dont let the fact that this cd has a rough mix turn you off. The bass, the guitar and the drums all sounded perfect to me and the production also made Brains drums sound big which was great. This is a great album . I wore out my cassette so i bought it on cd at a bargain price. I miss the 90s.

After Punchbowl and drummer Herb leaving many fans wondered what was gonna happen to our beloved Primus? Proving that the true genius of the band lies in the interplay between Les and Ler, they picked up new drummer Brain and carried on. Probably one of the best sounding albums in their collection the Brown Album needs to be listened to on headphones to be truly appreciated. Aside from the always creative songwriting and musicianship, the layers upon layers of sounds on this album is amazing. You can literally hear Claypools calloused fingers scrapping across the strings as they tear through another collection of intriguing and odd but wonderful tunes. Considering the somewhat steady decline in popularity after their early/mid 90s peak the fact that this album is as good as it is and still went unrecognized is depressing. Adding the new drummer definitely seemed to breathe some new life into the original members still left and they went on to create what in my opinion is their most solid album since Seas of Cheese. Worth checking out if you haven''t yet. *****

Chastising of Renegade is a fave song on their; Primus''s trademark "rhythmic layering" of the Bass, Guitar, and Drums is just a groovy sound for me. Check it out.

This is, in my opinion, the best album that Primus has put out. I prefer Brain over Herb b/c he''s more of a caustic type drummer. His fills are of the type where the drumming must be precise or it sounds awful and the flavor of the song is lost. The guitar sounds are perfect for every song. Listening to it, I feel that the sound for the guitar was well thought out and made a priority, like Monet choosing his color palette. What can I say about Claypool? Nothing I can say will illustrate how talented he is on this album, and in general.

I had read a review of the Brown album that stated most of the songs were too similar. Being a loving Primus fan I was offended. After listening to it again I must say I agree. However, I am still in love with Kalamazoo, Arnie, Coddingtown, and most especially Shake hands with beef and Bobs party time. I only wish I could pick up on all of the references Mr. Claypool makes. I was once arrested for simple possession in El Sobrante following an Ozzy Osbourne concert at the Cow Palace. My good friend got busted for DUI. I too owned a Crossman. I bought it at Best with my own paper route money. Best was cool. Back when department stores sold firearms. I am drunk.

This album COMPLETELY exceeded my expectations. The album is worth buying for the return of Sathington Willoughby alone. My 3 favourite tracks are the return of Sathington willoughby, shake hands with beef and puddin taine (Very goofy song)

The Brown album is my least favourite of Primus'' first six albums, but I still really like it. I think it''s better than their most recent album The Desaturating Seven and much better than Chocolate Factory. Some Primus fans don''t like it because Herb is no longer the drummer and while Herb is my favourite Primus drummer, I think Brain sounds good on this album as long as your ear is not expecting Herb''s fills and cymbal work. This new pressing sounds great and comes from the original analog tapes. The gatefold is nice and sturdy. I would highly recommend this reissue to Primus fans who are into vinyl.
